- If you are a sex worker, you can get hepatitis B
- This an STI that can make you very sick
- You can get a vaccination so you can't get hepatitis B. There are three shots
- The vaccine is free for sex workers
Why get vaccinated
The vaccine protects you against hepatitis B for life. You then cannot get sick from it.
The vaccine consists of 3 injections. You get the second injection 1 month after the first injection. Six months later, you get the 3th injection. You are then protected for the rest of your life.
Condoms are good protection against hepatitis B, but don’t protect you 100%. A vaccination does.

Twinrix
Since June 2, 2025, some sex workers can also get vaccinated against hepatitis A for free. This only applies to (cis) male and trans sex workers who have sex with men.
This does not apply to sex workers who only have heterosexual contact.
This vaccination is called Twinrix. If you are not yet (fully) vaccinated against hepatitis B, you can get Twinrix for free. You do have to pay for a separate hepatitis A vaccination.
Where to get your vaccination
You get the shots at the outpatient clinic of the municipal health service (GGD). This is free and anonymous.

Take an STI test
Are you a sex worker? Then get an STI test twice a year. You can do this at your doctor’s officer or for free at the municipal health service (GGD). Then you will know for sure whether you have an STI. And you will get medicine for it right away.
How does vaccination work
You get three shots over a period of three months:
- You get the second shot at least one month after your first shot
- You get the third shot at least six months after your first shot
The vaccine will protect you against hepatitis B forever, so you can never get the disease.
Does the vaccination have any side-effects?
You may have these symptoms shortly after vaccination:
- The place where you got the shot may hurt a bit, be red and swollen
- Tiredness
- Headache
The symptoms clear up after a few days.
What is hepatitis B?
You can get this disease by having sex. Or sharing a needle to take drugs with someone. You can get very sick. You could get liver cancer, for example.
