Filing a complaint
Did you have a bad experience? Were you robbed or abused for example? Then you can often file a report with the police.
Submit a complaint
Do you have a complaint about the police? This is what you can do:
- Fill in the complaint form on the website of the police (in Dutch)
- Write a letter. Put the following in your letter:
- Your name
- Your address
- Your phone number (not mandatory, but might come in handy)
- The date of sending the complaint
- Your complaint (tell as clearly as possible what went wrong, when this happened and who you spoke to. It is okay if you don’t know a name)
- What you think the police should do with your complaint
- Send supporting documents (evidence) if you have them. For example, papers that you received with your report
Send your letter to the department your complaint is about. You can find the addresses here
What to expect
A specialized (in complaint handling) police officer will contact you as soon as possible. You can explain more about your complaint.
Perhaps your complaint can already be solved during this conversation. If not, the police officer will tell you about the next steps:
- First, the police officer will try to organize a mediation meeting between you and the employee who is the subject of your complaint
- Is this not possible? Or does it not help? An independent complaints committee will investigate
- This committee advises the police chief about your complaint
- Then you will get a message about the decision of the police chief
If you do not agree with the conclusions of the police, you can contact Nationale Ombudsman (Dutch only). This is an organization that helps you if you have a problem with the government.
